The tag is only a clue.
Vintage sizing is not consistent with modern sizing—or even with other garments from the same era. Use the measurements in the Square or Etsy product listing, not the size printed on the label.
Compare garment measurements with a similar non-stretch garment that fits you well. Your body measurement and a garment measurement are not the same: clothing needs enough ease for comfort and movement.
Measured across the chest and doubled. Compare at the fullest part of the bust.
Measured across the natural waist and doubled. Leave comfortable breathing room.
Measured across the fullest area and doubled. “Full” means the skirt is not fitted at the hip.
Measured from the stated shoulder or waist point to the hem. Check shoes and desired hem clearance.
Understanding condition
Honest descriptions protect the buyer—and the garment.
Vintage is pre-owned and age-appropriate evidence of its earlier life may remain. Always read the written condition notes and inspect every photograph and video.
Excellent vintage condition
Exceptionally well preserved for its age, with no significant issues noted.
Very good vintage condition
Minor age-appropriate wear that does not take away from the garment.
Good vintage condition
Visible wear, repair or imperfection that is clearly disclosed and photographed.
Before alterations
Ask what the dress can safely handle.
Possible changes depend on seam allowance, hem depth, original construction and the strength of the fabric, lace or tulle. Matching old fabric and trim can be difficult.
A vintage gown should be assessed by an experienced vintage bridal alterations specialist before cutting begins. Adrienne can share available seam, hem and construction details, but only the professional working with the dress can confirm a final alteration plan.
